Over 30 years ago I came to the University of Utah to complete post-graduate work. The unique allure of Utah’s Capital City, with its combination of geographic beauty, metropolitan energy and year-round outdoor recreation opportunities, kept me here.
A career in planning and the opportunity to serve the diverse communities of this City – previously as a state legislator and now as Mayor – have enriched my experience, allowing me to pursue a passion for responsible, forward-looking utilization of public lands, sustainable community planning and making long-term livability the bellwether of public policy.
At the heart of moving Salt Lake City forward as a Great American City is a wide-ranging vision that includes as its priorities walkable communities, easy public transit options, earth-wise development guidelines, urban densification and an ongoing pursuit of practices that contribute to energy independence. Our work in the City is enhanced and informed by the great work and stellar programs offered by our partners at the University of Utah’s Department of City & Metropolitan Planning. I look forward to continuing our work together as we plan and build a sustainable and prosperous future.
